Senate Bill 311 now requires economics and financial education in Ohio schools.
What is the SB 311, OHIO CORE?
Legislation requiring that economics and financial literacy be integrated into one or more existing social studies credits, or another class, so that every student receives instruction in those concepts. The legislation is effective for students entering Ohio high schools in 2010.
What is the SB 311 Certificate?
SB 311 Certificate Program is designed for teaching professionals interested in becoming Ohio Core Integration Specialists in their schools and districts. Regionally, the certificate program is offered by the Economics Center for Education & Research at the University of Cincinnati.
What does the Certificate provide?
As part of the certificate, teachers receive intensive content instruction, and learn strategies for integration of this content into other curricula. In addition, educators become resources in content integration for other teachers in their districts. As integration specialists, they also bring a wealth of teaching resources to their schools and districts for use in teaching about economics and financial literacy.
What are the Certificate options?
There are two grade-specific certificate offerings: High School and K-8. High school certificate contains two curricular concentration options: Economics or Financial Literacy. K-8 educators can choose between grades 6-8 focus, or focus on K-5 content.
Who Grants the SB 311 Certificate?
Upon completion of the program, the Certificate is granted by the Economics Center of Education & Research at the University of Cincinnati. The Center offers professional development courses, and grants graduate credits through the University of Cincinnati. The Centers for Economic Education are identified in the SB 311 as resources schools and districts should utilize to meet the new graduation requirements.
